What is Crypto phone?

Also known as crypto phones, crypto phones are communication devices that use advanced security features as a means of minimizing the potential for interception of voice and data transmissions during a live exchange. The ability to bypass many forms of electronic surveillance and decrease the potential for espionage makes the crypto phone ideal for use in a number of commercial settings, as well as for high-profile government officials and intelligence operatives. While there are several strategies used in different crypto phone designs, most employ a process that involves signal encryption that makes interception more difficult to handle or decrypt into usable data, usually with the help of a cryptographic chip.

In some encryption designs, the system works by using two encryption tools instead of single protection. Often the approach is to use more than one algorithm that encrypts the incoming and outgoing signals once, and then a second time before reaching the termination point. This essentially makes it possible to discourage multi-layered surveillance techniques that can override one of the encryption codes, but not both. The end result is the ability to use an Internet-capable portable phone device not only to use voice communications with relatively little interception concern but also to transmit documents over a secure, peer-to-peer connection

The use of encryption technology requires that both the origin point and the termination point use devices that have the same level of encryption. This means that in order to carry out a truly secure conversation, both parties must use the same type of crypto phone, operating with the same type of protection protocols. Although it is possible to obtain a degree of protection in a connection that uses a crypto phone at one end but not the other, there is always the possibility that the unprotected end will be monitored and data will be intercepted while being sent or received.

In many nations around the world, the use of cryptocurrencies is legal for private citizens and government officials. This has led to a growing industry in which relatively inexpensive communication equipment with encrypted security is available. Along with purchasing through authorized suppliers in brick and mortar environments, it is also possible to purchase such equipment online. In nations where there are still restrictions on the use of these types of devices, there are often severe penalties for possessing such phones illegally. Those penalties can range from severe fines to imprisonment.
