Maharashtra cyber police warned that criminals send fake "TikTok Pro" links via WhatsApp to steal user data. Cybercriminals are reportedly creating bogus Tiktok Pro links that direct users to malware-laden content. The malicious links are apparently meant to catch people who want to download the video-sharing app. However, the actual app is now banned in the country along with various other Chinese apps. Cyber police urged citizens not to click on any of the links received through text messages or instant messaging applications.

The development comes in the wake of the recent ban imposed on TikTok by the Indian government. In fact, in light of mounting tensions between China and the US, even the US government is contemplating banning the popular video-sharing platform. However, whether that finally happens or not remains to be seen.

Owned by China-based tech company ByteDance, TikTok has been desperately trying to distance itself from China. The company is reportedly considering changing its global headquarters outside of China to address concerns voiced by some lawmakers and US security agencies. The company also pulled out of Hong Kong this week after Beijing implemented a controversial new "security law".

Following its ban in India last week, the company's CEO Kevin Mayer also claimed that the company has never released Indian user data to the Chinese government. He further stated that the company would not comply with such an order, even if Beijing requested it. The company also promised to establish a data center in India to comply with the country's data privacy laws.
