A "green" building is a building that, in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative impacts and can create positive impacts on our climate and natural environment. Green buildings preserve precious natural resources and improve our quality of life.

- Use of renewable energy, such as solar energy.
- Pollution and waste reduction measures, and the authorization of reuse and recycling.
- Good indoor ambient air quality
- Use of non-toxic, ethical and sustainable materials.
- Consideration of the environment in the design, construction and operation.
- Consideration of the quality of life of the occupants in the design, construction and operation.
- A design that allows adaptation to a changing environment.
Any building can be a green building, be it a house, office, school, hospital, community centre, or any other type of structure, as long as it includes the features listed above.
However, it is worth noting that not all green buildings are, and should be, the same. Different countries and regions have a variety of characteristics, such as distinctive weather conditions, unique cultures and traditions, various types and ages of buildings, or broad environmental, economic, and social priorities, all of which determine their approach to green building.
This is why WorldGBC supports its member Green Building Councils and its member companies in individual countries and in all regions to search for green buildings that are better suited to their own markets.
