Smartphones, like all technology, start to slow down after a while. There are many reasons why phones start to lag, many of which you can resolve relatively quickly. It's also important to note that your phone may only appear slower, as it seemed so much faster when you first bought it. Sometimes, however, the solution is to upgrade to a new model.

Common reasons why phones slow down:

  • Bad data or Wi-Fi connection
  • Out of date software and apps
  • Power-hungry apps
  • Low storage space
How to speed up your phone
There are many solutions to speed up a slow phone, including anything from restarting, updating the operating system, downloading data, and doing a factory reset. Many of the solutions can also solve all kinds of problems.

1. Check the Wi-Fi signal strength. Sometimes it's not your phone that's slow, it's your Wi-Fi connection. It could also be a mobile network problem. Check these connections and switch to another Wi-Fi network or move to another location.

2. Restart your Android or restart your iPhone. If you haven't restarted your phone in a while, that might be the trick. It's always a good idea to give it a try before looking for other possibilities, as it can fix a number of performance issues.

3. Check for updates for your Android or iOS smartphone. Operating system updates often contain fixes for problems that can slow down a phone, such as background processes. If one is available, go ahead and update your Android or iPhone OS.

4. Uninstall the Android or iPhone applications that you no longer use or that take up more space or bandwidth. If anything, this frees up space for new apps, photos, and other data.

5. Check for Android app updates or iOS app updates. For the apps you use, make sure they are up to date. As with operating system updates, application updates often contain bug fixes that can cause performance issues.

6. Free up storage space on your Android or iPhone. Take advantage of cloud storage and backup your Android or iPhone using a cloud service like Google Drive, Google Photos, iCloud, and Apple Photos.

7. Clear cache data on your Android or iPhone. Occasionally, the data your smartphone saves to make things move faster can slow things down. Erasing it can immediately fix smartphone problems and also free up space.

8. Reset your Android to factory settings or reset your iPhone. If nothing else works, try a factory reset, but make sure you back up your data first.

9. Contact technical support. For Android phones, contact your carrier or manufacturer; IPhone users can schedule an appointment at Genius Bar. If your smartphone keeps running slow after a factory reset, it's time to seek outside help.

10. Consider upgrading. If you haven't been successful, it may be time to upgrade to a new model. Android users should check out our guide to find out when it makes sense to update. Apple users can sign up for the iPhone update program or check if they are eligible for an update.
